What is Low Back Pain?
Low back pain results from many sources. The most common source is that of disc degeneration or problems with a disc.
However low back pain can also be caused by arthritis, a bone lesion, infection or a fracture to name just a few. The low back or lumbar spine has a total of five discs and five individual bones. Each one of these discs or bones that make up the structure of the lumbar spine can be a source of low back pain.

There are also two joints at each disc in the lumbar spine. These joints are termed facet joints made up of an articulation of the bone above a disc and the bone below that disc. These joints can also be a source of pain.
Arthritis can occur at these joints similar to arthritis that occurs at the hip or the knee.
Degeneration can occur within a single disc or numerous discs.
When determining or diagnosing the source of low back pain it is usually necessary to obtain an MRI or imaging study to clarify the source.
