What is Spinal Stenosis?
Simply put spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal this process can occur rapidly from some form of trauma or a disc herniation into the spinal canal. However the majority of spinal canal stenosis is due to chronic degenerative changes occurring in the spine. These changes occur over several years.
The narrowing of the spinal canal is caused by degenerative changes in multiple structures of the spine. Bony osteophytes form secondary to arthritis at the joints of the spine and thickening of certain ligaments within the spine.
As a result the cumulative affect is progressive narrowing of the spinal canal. This narrowing or stenosis of the spinal canal can occur in the neck, low back or mid back.
